Shaykh Abdul Wahid
Shaykh Abdul Wahid has been appointed as the leader of the Naqshbandi Tariqat for Australia by Mawlana Shaykh Nazim (may God be pleased with him) the 40th Grandshaykh of the Tariqat, and by Mawlana Shaykh Hisham Kabbani. He has authority to conduct the Khatm Khajawgan (the ceremony of the Masters of Wisdom) which is the main Naqshbandi liturgy, the Mevlevi Sema (or 'whirling') of the Mevlevi Tariqat, give initiation or Bayat to those who wish to become sincere followers of the Sufi tradition, as well as full authority to give Subha or spiritual discourses.
In the early 80’s, having developed a deep interest in meditative and contemplative practices, our Shaykh went to Japan to the famous Rinzai Sect temple complex of Daitokuji, in Kyoto. It was there that he was to meet a pupil of the Gurdjieff Fourth Way School and he returned to Australia and became a student of Brian Earl (student of John Bennet, author of “The Living Work”) and his wife, Nina Earl.
From this experience Shaykh Abdul Wahid went on to undertake a residential course in the Gurdjieff methods under the auspices of Pierre Elliot at Claymont, in West Virginia, USA. It was here that our Shaykh’s interest in Sufism flourished and he returned to Australia once more and became a student of the Mevelvi Shaykh, Shaykh Abdul Aziz and the Naqshbandi Shaykh, Shaykh Abdullah Sirr Dan al Jamal (qs).
Following the passing of Shaykh Abdullah, he had the blessed fortune to meet Shaykh Hisham Kabbani who initiated Shaykh Abdul Wahid into the Naqshbandi Tariqat under Shaykh Nazim. Since that time, our Shaykh has remained a student of Shaykh Hisham, accompanying him on many travels, and of Shaykh Nazim, through many visits to his dergah and home in Cyprus up until the passing of this Great Saint in 2014.
Under the direction and support of Shaykh Nazim and Shaykh Hisham, Abdul Wahid underwent a 45 day seclusion in the mountains of Indonesia. It was after this experience our Shaykh was asked to assume leadership of the Naqshbandi Tariqat for Australia. Since then he has worked tirelessly to teach Sufism to whomever graces our regular meetings and workshops.
